How to know when it´s time to say bye bye to your therapy

Tall+Oaks+552It´s a question that everyone makes to themselves sooner or later. Most of the time it’s sooner. It´s called resistance to the therapy, or maybe there´s no chemistry with your therapist and it´s time to look for a different person (sometimes it´s a matter of trial and error to find the most suitable therapist for you.

But what happens when you´ve been going to therapy for some time and start wondering if it´s time to jump of the boat? You ask your Doc?
Nah… well, you could, but it´s even better if you first analyze what´s going on with you to want out.
First of all, think backwards. Remember why you first went to that frightening (or not) first interview. Is that issue solved? Is it partially solved? Are you comfortable with the results so far? If the answer to this last question is yes, you could just step out for sometime to let your mind work things out on it´s own and rearrange the books in your bookshelf and go back to your therapy later on. Sometimes is necessary to take some distance to get perspective.
Caught yourself talking about the weather or small talk? This is a tricky one. In my own experience, whenever i had a couple of sessions without no noticeable progress (and when the impulse to drop the therapy was stronger), it was when I was close to an important issue, it just wouldn´t come out during the session that easily. So a tip would be: think about why is this happening. Are you approaching a thorny aspect of your history/issue? If you don´t consider so, then take a break.
A good marker that could tell you that it´s enough, is when faced with a situation where you can ask yourself the question your therapist would have asked. Means you have a new process of thinking internalized that helps you to deal with the dilemmas you could face.
Finally, don´t hesitate in discussing your decision with your therapist, he might tell you something you were not expecting and make you change your mind. But no matter what, it´s always your call.
