When Interviewers Don't Call Back

You had an interview 3 weeks ago and no one has gotten back to you yet. You start crawling up walls, you wonder if it’s OK to call or if you just have to wait. You don’t want to be a pain in the butt but you also want resolution. You need to know if you got hired or if you need to keep searching.

Some companies are impolite and don’t bother calling people when they are not chosen, specially for low tier jobs, which is no justification. Some recruiters are just forgetful and for others,  telling someone he/she wasn’t hired makes them uncomfortable so they skip the whole calling part. Unfortunately it’s a fact you have to deal with… but if it serves as consolation, you may not want to work in a company that shows such a disregard towards people.

What to do

It’s OK call. Don’t harass them every day because that’s a sure way of not being hired. Call the recruiter and ask them about the search process: if they are still interviewing or if they are done with it and have started the decision making process. Ask for how long they expect the process to take, it may curb your anxiety for a while.

What you should have done

When you are at the interview, ask about how long it’s gonna take them to make a decision. That will set the expectations from the get go and you won’t have to worry about it, at least until that time-frame expires. Then, call.
