Study Claims that Mondays Are No Worse Than Any Other Weekday

You thought you felt the crappiest and moodiest on Mondays? Think again, because according to research published by a team of psychologists at Stony Brook University Mondays are not “the worst” day of the week. Instead, the say that we should leave Mondays alone and that weekdays (as in Monday through Friday) should be blamed.

“There are many beliefs about the patterning of positive and negative mood over the course of the week”, writes Arthur Stone, first author of the paper. He also says that support has been found for ‘Blue Monday’, ‘Thank God it’s Friday’ and Weekdays versus Weekend effects, although in relatively small studies and often with student samples. Using telephone questionnaire data from a large national survey (N=340,000), we examined day-of-week effects on positive and negative moods.

This means that according to this study, Mondays are no better or worse than say Tuesdays or Thursdays.

And I contend that, based on a smaller statistical sample (N= 1).

It’s been proven that Monday is the day with the highest absenteeism rate and the guy who drew this perfectly reflects what I bet everyone except for most of those sampled for this study feel about weekdays:

I posit that weeks follow a curve that peaks on saturdays and plummets on Mondays. And since I have no way of statistically proving this, we’ll make a poll.

What do you think, are Mondays the “worst day of the week”? You can also tell us in the comments section if you don’t agree with the neither the study nor me.

I try to make all of my days count but hands down, Monday is the worst day of the week for me! It ushers in the tasks I need to accomplish for the week and this can be extremely stressful. Thanks Fernando, this is such an amusing poll :)

Sunday nights definitely take the cake, this is usually the time when reality sinks in the hardest! :) Thanks!

As a freelancer, I can’t totally agree with this claim. Yet, seeing my brother, relatives and other family members who are working as employees, I find this very true. Of course the transition of having two day vacation over the weekend then back to work again may actually result to that feeling of wanting more breaks.

I also work from home and it’s much better than to put up with a boss at a regular job. For one online you work when you want. You can work at 3 AM or wake up very late in the day. You can have more time for family and other activities and still make money. So for me Mon-Fri are similar :)

Students might feel Monday as a boring day but it is a good thing to remember that we should always start the week happy and alive! Let learning or working be an enjoyable activity.
