If you had the misfortune of being interviewed by Human Resources or an external company representative, only later to come face-to-face with what seems to be the knuckle-dragging incompetence of the potentially out-most idiotic boss, you know you’re in for trouble.

So, to implement some ‘regain-your-sanity’ measures, cool your jets, buckle up and tune out of the That’s It, I’m screwed! My Boss Is An Idiot! mode and look out for benchmarks and solutions to your dilemma. For now, please resist the temptation to assault the idiocy and stab him/her in the back with the stapler, we do not recommend such conduct. Sources tell us you could serve some serious time for it!

After-all, if you’re unable to emotionally and psychologically detach from the ‘hopefully-not-contagious’ idiotic boss, his/her corporate cluelessness could have detrimental effects on your well-being (as you habitually lye awake at night -dark circles and bags under your blood-shot eyes- planning the perfect retribution), not to mention potentially terminal to your career prospects.

So! Incompetent-Idiot-Detector Red Flags should flare up at the following warning signs:

  • He/she is aloof, disrespectful and bashful of his/hers own colleagues, superiors and organization

Why do we consider that to be a hint of an intellectually or strategically challenged boss?

With the emergence of increased corporate spying, incognito journalists, and/or ethical employees (they’ve not yet perished), chances are he/she will relay the sensitive information to the wrong source. Once the bashing is out, there is no ‘taking it back’ opportunity. After all, corporate spy’s or the infiltrated ‘moles’ are intelligent creatures with a sole purpose of digging dirt and revealing the inside scoop to the general public, contracted source and the higher authorities.

Any wise boss (and non-boss) would know how to navigate the corporate world and the strict rules of maintain diplomacy at all times.

Additionally (to our rescue), John Grubbs kindly shares with us 5 Clues You Have An Idiot For A Boss:

So, whether you’re your every day citizen that just wants to get by, serve your time for the job you’re paid to do, or a high achiever (we don’t discriminate) getting around the That’s It, I’m screwed! My Boss Is An Idiot hiccup requires tact, and lots of it.

So it’s our pleasure to present you with the Howcast‘s recommendations on How To Deal With An Incompetent Boss:

But here -Fernando and I- like to offer you solutions. So what makes a good boss you wonder – if you’ve never met one? Take a peak at the WorkSimple Infographic and see if you agree!

Best of luck!

I think my Boss is an idiot, he spies on almost everything that one does and this irritates me alot. Thanks for the great videos and article up there. I wish my boss can learn these tips and become a good boss.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your comment!

We feel you and the Idiot Boss situation. Micromanagement tends to come as an insult to competent employees that are able to self-direct and self-manage work routines and accomplish deadlines.

Do you think your boss spies on its colleagues out of mistrust of their daily productivity goals or do you believe it’s his lack of knowledge or awareness of (more) effective leadership styles – or a conscious choice to be a jackass?

How would you go about making your boss aware there are better ways to handle his supervisory approach at the workplace?

My immediate boss is such a drag, and highly incompetent. He has failed interviews for progression to the next level 2 times in a row, and consequently leaving no scope for us (his subordinates) to be promoted as well. Coz then there’s no position available for any one of us to be promoted in the current project.

I guess I need to seriously discuss this with my boss’s senior, I can no longer bear the brunt of his incompetence.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your comment!

It appears you are in somewhat of a challenging pickle, dealing with both high-level incompetence and inability to progress in your career due to the obstacles ‘the boss’ presents.

You might have already read our entry on ~ Why Problem Employees Don’t Get Fired But You Might: http://fernandotarnogol.com/career-tips/why-problem-employees-dont-get-fired-but-you-might/… as some wonder how do Idiot Bosses get hired in the first place?

We wish you best of luck in tackling the sensitive topic with the superiors! :0)

Hey Sarah,

Have you considered helping your boss make it to the next level to free up the spot for you or one of your colleagues? http://fernandotarnogol.com/career-tips/careers-climbing-up-the-ladder-lightning-fast/

Hey Fernando,

Should incompetency be promoted?

How would that appear to a competent, more suitable or deserving person?

Additionally, if one cannot handle low(er) management levels, moving up the chain can cost the sanity of a much larger number of employees, not to mention the organization as a whole.

Well, I was looking at the brighter side of things. But good point, tho.

As Sarah said, as the guy didn’t make it the last two times he had a shot for a promotion I’m quite certain that this has taken a toll in his motivation and performance. If his team can make him feel supported, this may give him a confidence boost making step up his game.

Yet, if someone else has been getting the job, then, what use to the company does he have? If incompetence can be proven and the company gets rid of him, then it may be an excellent opportunity for Sarah and her mates to get a promotion.

Great infographic and a video as well. I have a boss but he is not an idiot and I am happy to work with him. Weather my boss is an idiot or not I have to respect because no matter what he’s my boss and he pays me according to my performance. By the way there are things I learned from you and thank you so much for that.

Hi Nicholle,

Thank you for your comment!

It is always great to hear success stories of awesome bosses, it shows they are not extinct. :)

We are very pleased and appreciative to hear you found our post informative! :)

Thank you!

PS: I had to ask. If your boss would chose to not pay you fair -according to your performance, as you say- would that change your views regarding his competency?

I always brighten my day by thinking he won’t be able to stay too long on that position and i’ll soon replace him. That drives away any negative feelings i have towards him. Alcohol also helps if mixed in the ecuation.

Funny infographic :)
